The People of Boston are Pissed, but why?

Do you agree?

Dear Readers,

In an exciting development for Boston's urban landscape, the city is set to witness its first-ever transformation of a downtown office building into a vibrant residential hub. With the green light from city planners, the pioneering project at 218 Franklin St. is paving the way for a new chapter in urban living.

This six-story brick edifice, which currently hosts commercial tenants on its ground floor and office spaces above, is undergoing a remarkable transformation. The building's upper levels will be renovated to welcome residents into modern apartment living, marking a significant milestone under the Boston Planning and Development Agency's innovative tax incentive program for office-to-apartment conversions.

As the inaugural applicant to this forward-thinking program, the project at 218 Franklin St. is not only a testament to the city's commitment to revitalizing its urban core but also highlights the streamlined process designed to facilitate these transformations. Set to commence construction in the coming months, this initiative promises to enrich Boston's housing landscape with a mix of studio and one-bedroom apartments, including units designated as income-restricted to ensure accessibility for all.

With plans to incorporate amenities such as bike storage, energy-efficient appliances, and upgraded HVAC systems, the project is a blueprint for sustainable urban living. As we anticipate the completion of this and other applications to the program, Boston stands on the brink of an exciting transformation, reshaping its skyline from workplaces to welcoming homes.

218 Franklin St, Boston

That being said there seems to be A LOT of people who don’t agree with this, and I eventually want to make a video in regards to this. Here are some comments from WCVB on the topic, which I don’t really understand or agree with. In light of our housing inventory crisis, particularly in Eastern Massachusetts, converting vacant office buildings, that would otherwise sit and have more deferred maintenance into residential spaces offers a pragmatic solution. Obviously, preserving historical integrity is vital, but the urgent need for housing can't be overlooked. Such conversions could not only help alleviate the housing shortage but also revitalize urban areas by welcoming more residents.

I'm just curious why are people so against this? Would you rather see these buildings rot?

What’s the alternative?
